MAMbo - Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna (Bologna Civic Museums Sector) presents the exhibition Immagini del No. Reenactment. The photographs of Anna Candiani and Paola Mattioli visitable in the Foyer of the museum from November 13, 2024 to January 12, 2025.
The exhibition presented at MAMbo, curated by Valentina Rossi, is a reenactment of the photographic project Immagini del No created during the 1974 referendum campaign that aimed to repeal the law instituting divorce (Dec. 1, 1970, No. 898 Discipline of cases of dissolution of marriage).
The initiative, born from the collaboration between the photographers Anna Candiani and Paola Mattioli, organized by Lanfranco Colombo with the graphic collaboration of Giovanni Anceschi on the occasion of the exhibition at Galleria Il Diaframma in Milan (November-December 1974), extended beyond the documentation related to the referendum with the aim of exploring the concept of “No” in a broader context of feminist militancy. The circular arrangement of the exhibition allowed its fruition on four thematic levels. Feminist demonstrations, house occupations, referendum-related events and social campaigns promoted by spontaneous groups were the focus of the 134 mostly black-and-white photographs arranged on overlapping strips within ten panels.
The year 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the Immagini del No project. Many of the ideals and struggles of women born within the feminist movement in the 1970s endure today in the new challenges at the center of public debate. This makes Candiani and Mattioli's project extraordinarily relevant in light of the path of freedom that women initiated in the past and continues today. By virtue of this reflection, the 1974 historical exhibition is revived at MAMbo by repurposing circular panels containing reprints of Paola Mattioli and Anna Candiani's photographs.
The opening is scheduled for Wednesday, November 13, 2024 from h 5-7 p.m.
