The Biscozzi | Rimbaud Foundation, in collaboration with the Gianni Bertini Association (Milan) and the Frittelli Archive for the Works of Gianni Bertini (Florence), presents the exhibition Gianni Bertini. Storia di un uomo senza storia, curated by Thierry Bertini and Roberto Lacarbonara, dedicated to one of the most original and influential artists who, working between Italy and France, was a forerunner and interpreter of the cultural transformation of post-war Europe.
The exhibition dedicated to Gianni Bertini (Pisa 1922 – Caen 2010) is based on the curatorial concept developed by the Fondazione Biscozzi | Rimbaud through dialogue with the artists featured in the permanent collection, with the aim of better understanding and exploring the contexts, languages and phenomena of 20th-century artistic practice.
The title of the exhibition, The Story of a Man Without a Story – taken from the unpublished novel of the same name that the artist wrote in 1953 and recited during a happening in Campo San Fantin in Venice on the night of 11 August – serves as a veritable manifesto of thought, underpinning the entire vision and complexity of Gianni Bertini’s work.
The exhibition – comprising over 40 works and a selection of artist’s books, including the unpublished novel that lends its title to the exhibition – focuses on a specific phase of Bertini’s output, among his most original and compelling, spanning from 1946 to the 1970s, exploring three main strands of his work: from the Gridi of the 1940s, through the extensive informal output of the 1950s, to the subsequent conception and development of Mec-Art.
