How to recount an entire century in a single exhibition?
Curators Mario Toscano and Vittorio Bo take up the challenge and propose an exhibition that, in seven sections, offers a detailed overview of the 20th century through the history, art and daily life of Italian Jews.
A project that illustrates the complex path, first of all of the acquisition of citizenship, then of the loss and finally of the reacquisition of rights by a minority that recognised and integrated itself into Italian society.
It begins at the end of the 19th century after the dismantling of the ghettos and concludes at the dawn of the new millennium, gathering the questions of contemporary Judaism. There is no lack of reflection on the Shoah: the dramatic overthrow of the Racial Laws of 1938, persecution and deportation.
The exhibition is enriched by contemporary works of art; photographs from public and private archives; historical documents and family objects. Many stories are collected that will make you discover and rediscover figures from Jewish Italy: from the art of Olga and Corinna Modigliani to the paintings of Corrado Cagli to Antonietta Raphaël Mafai, Rudolf Levy and Emanuele Luzzati. The public will also be able to immerse themselves in the contents collected in the multimedia table, which has been entrusted with the task of making in-depth studies, original materials and first editions accessible, contributing to complete the mosaic of 20th century cultural history.
