Michela Rizzo and Simone Frittelli are pleased to announce the opening of their new gallery in Milan, at Viale Stelvio 66, which will join their respective spaces in Venice and Florence. With the inaugural exhibition Disegno singolare. Il disegno ai tempi dell’Intelligenza Artificiale, curated by Elio Grazioli, the gallerists wish to immediately suggest some of the key traits they intend to develop in their program. The gallery aims to offer a place where collectors, scholars, and visitors can feel at ease in an atmosphere of reflection on the issues of art, while always upholding the defense and promotion of their artists. Why drawing? Defining “drawing” today is rather problematic, since all categories of contemporary art have opened up and diversified. Here it is understood as that work on paper, often with quick tools such as pencils above all, which are used to be freer, less programmatic, less design-oriented—to give space to impulse, idea, boldness, chance, automatism, the unconscious—in ways not so freely pursued in works realized through other techniques. Precisely for this reason, drawing becomes the site of a stratification of instances whose complex yet fascinating dialectic is of interest here, ultimately achieving a full characterization and autonomy as a work of art in its own right. Grazioli begins from the observation that, in every moment of contemporaneity marked by major social, technological, or cultural shifts—or when artists seek to establish their originality in relation to surrounding movements, whether within or outside them—they often return to drawing. And not only artists, but also historians, critics, and theorists. A glance at the last few decades reveals major exhibitions and significant publications that support this claim. Grazioli elaborates on this, naturally, in the text he has written for the occasion. The current moment of change, of course, is defined by the Internet, social media, and, even more recently, Artificial Intelligence. This serves as a background rather than a direct theme: the exhibition will include few works directly confronting AI. But once again, it is no coincidence that drawing returns when drawing itself can be done differently—when technology compels us to rethink our human, creative, and aesthetic condition. The exhibition’s title “Disegno singolare. Il disegno ai tempi dell’Intelligenza Artificiale” points to “singularity” as the central theme, beyond technical issues: humanity, and especially the artist, embodies, defends, and enacts singularity—while technology follows programs, lacking any need to distinguish itself, to transgress, to think outside the box, to be original. The exhibition is not intended as a museum show but as an illustrative one, drawing— literally and figuratively—on the resources and interests of the gallerists and the curator. It will be divided into two sections: a “historical” one, with examples of artists who used drawing to assert and demonstrate their distinctiveness against established categories and movements. These include: Dadamaino, Carla Accardi, Mario Schifano, Pino Pascali, Giuseppe Chiari, Alighiero Boetti, Eva Sorensen, Lucio Pozzi, Pietro Fortuna—a selection that still allows for reflection on the past decades. The second section focuses on more recent artists, with the aim of presenting new uses and conceptions of drawing that dig into the reasons for singularity. The artists are: Stefano Arienti, Luca Pancrazzi, Eva Marisaldi and Enrico Serotti, Claudia Losi, Marco Cingolani, Gianluca Codeghini, Andrea Mastrovito, Giulio Lacchini, Sergio Breviario, Maria Teresa Sartori, Matthew Attard, Giorgia Fincato. These artists allow the theme of the exhibition to be observed from different perspectives, under various angles, touching on numerous other issues: animal intelligence in addition to human and artificial intelligence, the necessity of strategies to avoid falling into false spontaneity, the roles of sensitivity, the unconscious, and technique. A catalogue will be published during the exhibition, featuring an extensive text by Elio Grazioli, who in turn seeks to outline the connections and stratifications of these themes.
