The exhibition Cari agli dèi: l’età giovane e la rivoluzione nelle arti [Dear to the Gods: The Young Age and Revolution in the Arts] at Villa d'Este from 19 July to 3 November 2024 pays tribute to the great artists who died young.
Organised by the Istituto Autonomo Villa Adriana e Villa d'Este - VILLÆ and curated by Andrea Bruciati, Director of the Institute, the exhibition extends its reflection to all fields of art, from painting to music, from poetry to cinema to photography, investigating those figures who in just a few years revolutionised the signs of their contemporary world through their art.
The title, taken from an ancient verse by the Greek playwright Menander (c. 342-291 B.C.), evokes the theme of premature death, the focal point of the exhibition: “Dear to the gods” are the words that attempt to give consolation to the pain of premature mourning, trying to heal the loss with the knowledge that the gods, recognising the value and great abilities of the young people, wanted to call them back to be near.
Umberto Boccioni, Antonio Sant'Elia, Scipione, Yves Klein, Piero Manzoni, Pino Pascali, Francesca Woodman and Andrea Pazienza, in their short careers were capable of making such significant contributions that they profoundly changed the language of contemporary art.
Alongside their works are the masterpieces of writers such as Stephen Crane, Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Keats, Anne Brontë, Henri Alban Fournier, Raymond Radiguet, Heinrich von Kleist and Antonia Pozzi, who have indelibly altered linguistic codes and the collective imagination.
In the rooms of Villa d'Este, there will also be movie clips and musical excerpts of great names of the past who left unforgettable masterpieces in their lifetime, revolutionising the history of cinema and music.
Frittelli arte contemporanea contributed with the loan of a nucleus of works by Pino Pascali.
