The first step to being fully prepared is to panic completely.
‘Panic and arm yourselves!’ shout voices from the screens; pens sharper than swords write the same. ‘Hurry!’ they add. It is through urgency that one ensures one has reason to spare. In a few simple steps, we have concocted a medley of fear, helplessness and bitterness. The scale of the enemy gives us the feeling of a weight in the stomach, yet it makes our mouths water. It doesn’t matter if the dish is a bit of a mess; sharpen your forks and knives. ‘It’s not a mess, it’s smoked!’ they reassure us. There you go! The ancestral urge to run, arm ourselves, defend ourselves and attack is quickly stirred.
There is art that celebrates, and there is art that criticises. There are works that arm the powerful against the defenceless and defend the indefensible. There are masterpieces that stand in defence of the weakest, claiming the rights of those who will never see a work of art. There are artists who distribute critical weapons to the public, who fight against the weapons of mass distraction, who promote the weapons of thought.
And, amongst all these works that eternally meet and clash on the battlefield of art, luogo_e has attempted to assemble its own highly personal arsenal of thought. Weapons that, without harming the body, prod the spirit. And you, which side of art are you on?
