Frittelli arte contemporanea presents the exhibition Altra misura. Arte, fotografia e femminismo in Italia negli anni Settanta [Another Measure. Art, Photography and Feminism in Italy in the 1970s], curated by Raffaella Perna, which inaugurates on Saturday 21 November 2015 and will remain open until 8 March 2016.

The exhibition proposes – through a selection of around a hundred works – a vast panorama of eleven artists (Italian, or resident in Italy ) who in the seventies chose to use photography as a preferred medium to explore the links between body and female identity, and to revendicate personal instances and experiences of life: Tomaso Binga, Diane Bond, Lisetta Carmi, Nicole Gravier, Ketty La Rocca, Lucia Marcucci, Paola Mattioli, Libera Mazzoleni, Verita Monselles, Anna Oberto e Cloti Ricciardi. These artists conducted a profound criticism of the femminine images diffused in the western visual culture, where the woman's body is habitually subjected to a process of objectification. The photographic medium is a precious ally in contesting actual representative models: the particular indicative nature of photography – its specific contiguity with reality – ensures that the photographic image is presented as a sensitive trace of the body, a place in which are inscribed not only the signs of biological identity, but also those signs connected to social and public roles. Therefore photography allows the artists to follow two paths contemporarily: through this medium, on one hand they put the body at the forefront, exploring its potential, limits and desires in the search for an identity no longer alienated, free from male criteria; on the other, they unveil the ideology transmitted by and in the images of the body.

The title of the exhibition is a homage to the homonymous exhibition curated by Romana Loda in 1976 in Falconara: a “minor” exhibition, far from the capitals of art, chosen to recall the commitment of those who, at the time, supported and promoted female experimentation.

Together with a rich collection of documents related to the history of feminism (books, magazines, posters, etc.), the original maquettes of Ci vediamo mercoledì. Gli altri giorni ci immaginiamo [See you on Wednesday. The other days we picture ourselves] are on show for the first time - Bundi Alberti, Diane Bond, Mercedes Cuman, Paola Mattioli, Adriana Monti, Silvia Truppi - a photographic book published by Mazzotta in 1978, which includes individual materials and collective experiences dedicated to the female image and the relationship between women.

On the occasion of the opening there will be performances by Tomaso Binga and Libera Mazzoleni. 

During the exhibition there will also be a cycle of five conferences dedicated to deepening the relationship between art and feminism in Italy through the testimonies of female artists, art historians, gallery owners, curators and collectors, invited to reflect on the historical context, the experiences of self-managed collectives, and the relationship between art and militancy.
